Milatović proposed constructing a monument dedicated to Montenegrin independence in Podgorica

Montenegro's President Jakov Milatović has submitted an initiative to Podgorica Mayor Saša Mujović proposing the construction of a monument dedicated to Montenegrin independence in the capital.

According to the statement, the initiative is one of the activities within the President's program marking the 20th anniversary of the restoration of Montenegro's independence. Its aim is to provide Podgorica with a dignified monument that will permanently commemorate the country's state continuity, tradition of freedom, and European future.

- This monument should not only commemorate the 20 years of restored independence, but also reflect the historical aspiration of our people to shape their own destiny - Milatović stated in the initiative.

The President noted that the initiative comes at a time of significant historical anniversaries: the 230th anniversary of the Battles of Martinići and Krusi, as well as the 150th anniversary of the Battles of Vučji Do and Fundina, all of which represent glorious chapters in Montenegro's struggle for freedom, statehood, and dignity.

- Freedom is never guaranteed; it must be constantly won, protected, and advanced - Milatović said.

He stressed that the values of freedom, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to a just society should be fittingly represented through this monument, not only as an expression of respect for the past, but also as a symbol of responsibility toward the future.

Milatović emphasized that Montenegro is building its European future upon these values, which is why the construction of the monument would carry particular significance ahead of 2028, when the country aims to become a full member of the European Union.

He added that 2028 also carries additional historical symbolism, as it will mark the 150th anniversary of the Congress of Berlin, the moment when Montenegro proudly and on equal footing with other European and world states entered the international stage.

- I kindly ask you to take all necessary legal steps, in accordance with this initiative, so that through our joint efforts Podgorica may gain this valuable testament to our glorious statehood, European orientation, and tradition of freedom - Milatović concluded in the initiative addressed to the Mayor of Podgorica.
