French President Emmanuel Macron will visit Cetinje today, ahead of the EU - Western Balkans Summit, which will be held tomorrow, June 5, in Tivat.
The Royal Capital is ready to welcome the French President, while the central part of the city and access roads to the Residence of the President of Montenegro have been closed.
A larger number of police officers can also be seen on the ground.
As previously announced by the Office of the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, this is the first official visit by a President of France to Montenegro, which, as stated, gives the event special historical and political significance.
- As part of the visit programme, a formal welcome ceremony will be held in front of the Residence of the President of Montenegro in Cetinje, while statements to the media are scheduled following the meeting between the two presidents - the statement said.
Today, Macron will also present Milatović with the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, the highest decoration of the French Republic.
The President’s Office stated that this act goes beyond the framework of state protocol and represents a strong message of respect for Milatović and Montenegro, its European orientation, and the place it currently holds among European partners.
Following the award ceremony, a friendship tree will be planted in the courtyard of the Residence of the President of Montenegro.
- Macron’s visit confirms the friendship between Montenegro and France, support for Montenegro’s European path, and Montenegro’s role as the most advanced candidate country for membership in the European Union - the statement concludes.
The Government had previously announced that agreements in several areas would be signed at 4:00 p.m. between representatives of the executive authorities of Montenegro and France, after which Prime Minister Milojko Spajić and President Macron will address the public.
