Sekulović on Marović: We could have done what Trump did with Maduro - kidnapped him

As far as the formal legal possibilities and procedures are concerned, this is the maximum the Ministry of Justice could have done when it comes to the extradition of Svetozar Marović. Beyond that, our hands are tied - said State Secretary at the Ministry of Justice Sergej Sekulović.
It should be recalled that the absolute statute of limitations for the enforcement of the prison sentence imposed on former Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) official Svetozar Marović expires on October 10, 2026.
- Over the past five or six years, three extradition requests have been sent and five urgent requests have been submitted. This was not done only during the term of office of the current Minister of Justice, (Bojan) Božović, but since the time of former Minister (Vladimir) Leposavić and onwards. As far as the formal legal possibilities and procedures are concerned, this is the maximum the Ministry of Justice could have done when it comes to the extradition of Svetozar Marović - Sekulović told Radio Montenegro.
He then joked about what else could have been done to secure Marović’s extradition, citing as an example the actions of US President Donald Tramp during the capture of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. US forces carried out an operation in Venezuela on January 3, 2026, capturing Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and taking them out of the country.
- Just to make a joke, as for what else the state could have done in this particular case, it could have used the technique Trump used with Maduro in Venezuela - sent in special forces and kidnapped Marović. Of course, that was a joke, but objectively speaking, that would have been the only possibility. Because, naturally, Montenegro cannot exercise any sovereign powers on the territory of Serbia. From our side, that is it - the State Secretary at the Ministry of Justice stressed.
Sekulović also said that once the statute of limitations expires, Marović will be a free man as far as this criminal offence is concerned.
