Nikolić: Fuel price increase of 23 cents in two weeks is not a market necessity, but a decision not to protect citizens’ living standards

Democratic Party of Socialists MP Andrija Nikolić said that the 23-cent increase in fuel prices over the past two weeks was not a market necessity, but rather a decision not to protect citizens’ living standards.

- We are facing an alarming situation, especially given that we are in the midst of the tourist season. We warned and called on the Government to intervene and reduce excise duties in order to prevent the impact on citizens’ living standards. The Government ignored our appeals, as well as the calls from the wider public, to adjust excise duties and decided that citizens of Montenegro should bear the cost of the new fuel price increase. A 23-cent increase in two weeks is not a market necessity, but a decision not to protect citizens’ living standards - Nikolić said in the Parliament of Montenegro.

According to him, the inevitable consequence will be a rise in the prices of all basic goods.

- Citizens must not become collateral damage of irresponsible government policy. A decision to adjust excise duties must be taken in order to cushion and reduce the expected impact on citizens’ living standards in the coming days - Nikolić said.
